Words & Shots By: Brendan Lee
Tuesday, April 22 2014 – The name Ghostface Killah is synonymos with many other words, Wu-Tang, Hip-Hop, Shaolin, Toney Starks, Ironman, and Pretty Toney to name a few. You can pretty much bank on the fact that anywhere the famed rapper plays, the Wu brand and its loyal followers are likely to show up in extensive numbers, and this rainy weeknight in Vancity was no exception to the preceding certainty.
The crowd was a buzz and slightly worn down by the time Ghostface hopped on stage around 12:30 am but the energy ignited the minute his raspy voice came through the speakers at Venue. There were some minor sound issues at first but this did not stop the iron member of the mighty Wu from spitting some serious bars, spanning a 20+ year catalogue.
Highlights were, of course, when some classics were played like Cream, Can It All Be So SImple, Raekwon’s Ice Cream, and the timeless Cher Chez La Ghost. He even brought a star.. errr “hip-hop God struck” crowd member on stage to help perform the first ever Wu-Tang song, Protect Ya Neck. The dude actually did a great job on Meths part but slightly stumbled through ODB’s more intricate verse, still have to give him mad props for having the balls to get on stage and rap with an icon.
Of course, fellow Wu-Block member Sheek Louch was alongside GFK for this tour and he did some classic joints along with some newer Wu-Block ones with ghost. The show definitely made for a great night and a nice prequel to the recently announced Wu-Tang Clan show in Vancouver, June 28th – be sure not to sleep on that one and peep the pics below. Wu baby! RIP ODB!
