Q: Let’s get this out of the way first… which brother is the evil one?
John: Definitely JunYor
Q: Haha that’s what the evil one would say. Did you come from a musical family? What pulled you both into making music?
J: Our dad is a guitar player/singer and also plays the drums and any instrument you give him really. We both started when we were about 14 & 15 one day when a friend of ours asked us to freestyle. We wouldn’t do it so we tried writing something down that night and it ended up not being horrible.
Q: Do you have any new music coming out?
J: We are working on a self titled EP right now that will be released this spring
Q: What can you tell us about this project? How is it different from your previous work?
J: Our last release was definitely a passion project filled with songs we had written over the span of the past 3 years. A lot of people are surprised when they hear our music because of how emotional some of it is. Because of our name people expect all of our songs to be loud and high energy but that’s not the meaning behind NOISE. With this EP we’re giving the people what they want while still staying true to ourselves and our sound.
Q: How do you see hiphop evolving in Vancouver as a culture?
J: Talent wise we feel like it is always evolving. We are always discovering new artists that are making amazing music. I think it is slowly being recognized for great hip hop in Canada with help from movements like SDK.
Q: Who are some of your favourite artists in Vancouver? What about Vancouver hiphop inspires you?
J: There are so many amazing artists in this city but some of our favourites are Junk, Merkules, Mike WIALD, Garrett Grhymes, Kai Skywalker, Stevie Ross, Neyvone, Matt Brevner. The list goes on. What inspires us about Vancouver hip hop is that everyone is creating their own sound. We feel like people here are always trying new things and pushing the boundaries instead of just making what they think will be popular.
Q: What is it about your style that separates you from your peers? What makes NOISE unique?
J: The main thing that separates us obviously is that we’re brother’s but I feel like we are bringing a different energy than a lot of artists. Especially in our live set because we are so close and we’re always feeding off each other and people can feel that.
Q: How do you feel you are pushing the limits of your art? In what ways do you still need to grow?
J: We are always trying to make every song better then the last and never get stuck in a box or be predictable. Our live set is definitely our strongest point but we are always trying to make it better. We have a lot of room to grow in the studio and just in the music business in general. We are just now starting to learn how much of a business it is. Nobody cares that your making good music if you’re not marketing yourself properly.
Q: What are the plans for NOISE in 2017? What are you most excited about?
J: We are releasing our EP in April and then leaving on a 2 month tour across Canada with Merkules. When we get back we’re going to focus on our online presence and flood the world with singles and videos.
