Fri July 12, 2013 – When we pulled up to Fortune Sound Club in my rusty old whip, bumping Apathy’s tape ‘Honky Kong,’ about an hour before doors even opened, there was already a crowd of fans waiting to get in the classic Chinatown spot. We were there early to link with Spliff Breaks, who were interviewing Apathy & Celph Titled, others I assume we’re there to secure a good spot or get the best merch before it sells out. If there is one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that hip hop heads are astoundingly punctual.
We walked into a calm and serious green room with Ap & Celph chillen out preparing for the show. These guys are serious performers and it was apparent they meant business and weren’t trying to fuck around – which also translated throughout there live show.
After openers transit, merkules and northwest division all did their thing respectively, it was time for the apathy & celph title to make their vancity debut. It was the first ever show for both demigodz members and they did not dissapoint in the slightest.
The two acclaimed underground emcees bombarded the stage, opening with the obligatory Demigodz is Back off the 2013 ‘Killmatic’ record. I highly recommend you check this album out if you haven’t heard it before – its solid a f. Ap & Celph are both also part of AOTP, a large collective of talented emcees lead by Vinnie Paz of Jedi Mind tricks. These guys all strive to be better than the next, making them a group of sharpened and fine tuned lyricists and performers in their own right. With one liners like “I’ll leave you dickheads covered in blood like period sex” Celph’s comical style matches well with the sometimes more serious and lyrical style of Apathy – which makes for great on-stage chemistry.
So they pretty much kept on point with performing the new demigodz tracks and of course a few classics. Some standout tracks for me were It Takes a Seven Nation Army by Apathy and the DJ premier producedStop What Ya Doin with both Ap & Celph titled. They also performed the medicinal tune Dumb High(according to Celph, he gets mad medicated every morning like Montel Williams) and finished off their set with the acclaimed Dead In The Middle, which samples a classic Big Pun verse from the song Twinz. They saluted the crowd and stuck around to meet with the fans to sign autographs and talk shit after the show, finally the Demigodz (err well part of them) played a show in Vancouver. Rejoice, backpackers!
