On Friday November 13th, rapper Waka Flocka Flame brought his talents to the Harbour Events Centre here in Vancouver. Along with DJ Whoo Kid, Waka certainly brought the hype. Even before Waka appeared on stage the crowd was already in a frenzy.
Waka opened up with “Wild Boy,” one of his biggest hits. The crowd immediately started jumping and singing along, a good indication that it was going to be a good night for the Turn Up Godz.
Throughout the duration of the night Waka treated the audience as if they were part of the set, interacting with them in a way that made them feel totally engaged in his music: this is a big part of what makes him such a good live performer. Waka Flocka himself was so energized during the set that there was rarely a moment when his massive dreadlocks weren’t flailing through the air to the rhythm of his beats.
Bringing out the first of the champagne bottles for his third song, “Hard in the Paint,” everyone went wild. Of course in any hip-hop show, once that champagne bath hits the crowd you know the intensity’s only gonna grow: at the Harbour Events Centre this proved true and as the crowd got more into the champagne, the crazier they got.
As a remix of “Turn Down for What” came through the speakers, Waka brought out what seemed to be an air hose to spray the crowd with. That only brought the party up to a whole new level. By bringing up a large section of the crowd on stage, Waka showed that he really does love to party with his fans.
The crowd here was so crazy that security had to get involved with some of the audience members that were on stage, telling them to get off in any way they could. Either having to be escorted off the stage or stage diving, they wouldn’t let security ruin their good time. This definitely showed Waka that Vancouver knows how to party as hard as he does.
Waka ended the night by deciding that it was his turn to spin a few tracks and let his DJ enjoy himself. His remixes of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and “Hotline Bling” were straight fire and the whole place went nuts. As the beat got faster and faster so did the crowd as they were dancing along to every minute of Waka being on stage.
