The anticipated full project from Toronto Jazz quartet BADBADNOTGOOD & Wu-Tang Legend Ghostface Killah titled ‘Sour Soul’ drops Feb 24th on eOne Music Canada and iTunes!
The raps are vintage Ghost and he’s at home on BBNG’s & Frank Dukes modern jazz production. When compared to the BBNG/Frank Dukes-produced track ‘River of Blood’ off RZA’s The Man with The Iron Fists, the record has an older sound. They do justice tastefully recapturing the sound of Curtis Mayfield’s era, and Ghost’s timeless presence is complemented by the live band feel. Instead of hearing him over 808’s or more ‘modern’ drum sounds you’d expect from, say, a Drake record, the sound of real drums is refreshing. The consistency from using the same band on each track lent well to sonically keeping all of the songs in the same realm.
The cohesiveness is unlike a lot of other groups that add live instrumentation on top of a pre-produced track. I would love to hear more about the making of the record from the band, Ghost and also Frank Dukes, who’s production credits are listed on every song of the project (Will there be a mini-doc from the sessions?). Elzhi, Danny Brown, MF Doom and Tree all make memorable appearances on an album that we think fans will love!
