Saturday, October 18 2014 – Zion I was back in town wrapping up their Canadian tour at Fortune Sound this weekend and it was packed for such an early show. There was a great atmosphere in the place throughout all the opening acts. Emotionz had a tight set with some of his trademark beatboxing and Aileron followed that up with a very polished performance. It was a great beginning for a night of quality hiphop music.
Amp Live started working the crowd with his turntables for a while before Zumbi jumped on. They set it off with that classic ‘Boom Bip’ and then everyone was hooked. Zion I alternated seamlessly between funky boom bap classic hiphop and their new more bass and synth heavy style. You can tell how well practiced they are as their stage presence and live coordination is flawless. Zumbi spent the night working the crowd, telling stories, and using a lot of call and response throughout their set which made for a captivating show that kept people moving all night.
The mood of the whole night is exactly what you want from a hiphop show. Zion I rounded out their set with a dope freestyle session even bringing Aileron on stage to rap with them. Overall it was everything their fans could want, they came with the classics but they kept the energy up with their new music too. The sound at Fortune was perfect, as per usual, and the vibe was infectious as Zion I ended a great night of hiphop as well as their Canadian tour with a bang.
